The ultimate preparation for the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche
The Gran Fondo Strade Bianche in stunning Tuscany is just around the corner - and I couldn't be more excited! This epic race, which takes place in March, promises an incredible challenge and an unforgettable adventure. With around 7,000 participants waiting to start and my place in starting block 2, there is no better motivation to prepare as best as possible. Here I share my preparation strategy for this great event, with a focus on interval training, Zone 2 rides and the perfect equipment.
Why preparing for Zwift begins
It's hard to get out for long rides in the winter, but Zwift provides an ideal platform to keep fit. My week is split between intense interval workouts and extended Zone 2 sessions to both increase my VO2max and solidify my aerobic base. The intensity is ramped up in the intervals to simulate racing scenarios, while the Zone 2 rides aim to maximize endurance - a key factor for the Strade Bianche.
Tip: Interval training of 3x10 minutes at 90-95% of FTP (Functional Threshold Power) is perfect for preparing the body for repeated exertion.
The perfect bike for the Strade Bianche
For this ride, I chose a tubeless gravel bike: the Canyon Grail CFR. Why? It's simple: the Strade Bianche runs along the famous white gravel roads of Tuscany, and a gravel bike offers the perfect balance between comfort and control. Thanks to the tubeless system, I have minimal risk of punctures - and after extensive testing, I trust my setup completely.
Of course, a classic road bike would also be an option. But the extra stability and slightly wider tires of the gravel bike make a big difference, especially on the challenging gravel sections. My goal is to complete the race without any technical problems and to fully enjoy the incredible scenery.
Tuscany calls: landscapes, adventures and emotions
The Strade Bianche is not just a race; it is a journey through one of the most beautiful regions in the world. The rolling hills of Tuscany, the vast vineyards and the seemingly endless white gravel roads provide a backdrop that motivates you with every pedal stroke. The thought of starting with 7,000 other enthusiastic riders makes my heart beat faster.
With my place in starting block 2, I have about 1,500 riders ahead of me - that means I will be challenged right from the start. But that's exactly what makes it so exciting: every kilometer is a new adventure, every climb a chance to exceed your own expectations.
Catering: Testing the perfect strategy
The right nutrition is the key to a successful race. In the weeks before the Gran Fondo, I extensively test the Sponser Ultra Competition Carb Drink and PowerBar Gels. Both products offer the perfect mix of energy and tolerability - crucial for a long race like this.
Tip: Plan your nutrition meticulously: I take a gel every 30 minutes or so and make sure I stay constantly hydrated. The Sponser drink provides additional electrolytes that I lose through sweating.
The adventure begins now
The countdown is on and I can't wait to take on the challenge of the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche. Preparing on Zwift, choosing the Canyon Grail CFR and extensive nutrition testing give me the confidence to give it my all.
This race is more than a sporting event - it is a journey to myself, through the breathtaking Tuscany and a statement of my love for road cycling. The Strade Bianche will be an adventure that I will never forget.
